Big Island of Hawaii Vacation Travel |
|
When to go? Except for October, when the Iron Man Triatheletes set the pace, the Big Island tends to operate in a relaxed, laid back manner. So plan your trip to this Hawaii - the island's actual name - when you need to take it slow. High season is December through April - with a big peak the week after Easter.

Where to stay? The beautiful Kohala Coast is lined with four and five star resorts, complete with private beaches and manicured golf courses. Perhaps you may prefer to rent a condo on the Kailua-Kona coast, or rent one of the many B&B's sprinkled around the island. Investigate package deals that include rental cars - no matter what, you'll need one to see all the different terrains of this "big" island.

What to do? The charmer of a farmer's market in Hilo offers a delectable dive into Hawaiian style donuts, or a prepared picnic lunch of fresh fish and fiddlehead greens. To wash it down, head to the source of Kona coffee - the plantations here offer tours and samplings. Nature lovers will delight in horseback riding through rainbows on Waimea's northern coast and hiking into the Big Island's mysterious land of lava: the Kilauea volcano.
