If you can do it, try to get to the Newport Jazz Fest that takes place each August. You’ll see top notch performers in a gorgeous outdoor setting. Stay at a B&B for some charm, or if you’re willing to drive a bit, there are many affordable motels outside of Newport. The restaurants are great — especially if you are a seafood fan. Be sure to do the Cliff Walk that takes you behind many of the incredible mansions. (Wear comfortable shoes). It’s worth spending the money on a tour of the mansions - they are beautiful examples of architecture. NOT TO BE MISSED - especially if you have kids - is “Green Animals,” a topiary garden located in Portsmouth (5 miles from Newport). There are over 80 different animals and figures carved from bushes - think Edward Scissorhands. It’s truly amazing and fun (but it’s seasonal, so check the hours before you go).

For those who like to shop, Newport abounds with charming shops and galleries. From souveniers to pieces of art, to handmade jewelry and clothing - you’ll find it all. Lots of walking, so be prepared. There’s a welcome center as you drive into town. Be sure to stop in - you can pick up brochures and discount tickets, and use the restrooms and have a drink at the water fountain.
