London is wonderful, but like any big city, can be overwhelming. Here are a couple of tips:
- Take a tour. When you first get there, a tour (bus or trolley) will help you get a feel for where things are. Plus a tour guide will be able to tell you about things that you’d never know otherwise.
- Don’t miss the “must sees” - The Tower of London, The Changing of the Guard, etc.
- If you are traveling without children, take a pub tour. They will take you to 3 or 4 pubs in London, provide you with drinks in each, a traditional pub dinner, and best of all, they’ll teach you pub songs to sing as you drink. Lots of fun!!
- Get up and out early. In the mid 1980’s, as a young college student, my friend and I went to London and would sleep until noon each day. By the time we got out, everything was closed. (They used to close everything in the mid-afternoon for a few hours.) Use your time wisely.
- See a show. The London theater district is renowned. If you go early, you can go to the 1/2 price ticket booth and get inexpensive tickets to that night’s performance.
- Talk to the locals. They are generally very nice, and it’s so much nicer to travel when you don’t feel like a “tourist.” You can get great info about where to eat, clubs to go to, etc.

A mother of two teenagers. I had the great pleasure to visit London during the Christmas/New Year Eve season of 2005-06. This was a first for me to fly overseas the flights were great. The people in London are very kind and helpful. When we reached our hotel, they made sure we didn’t sleep it was best to stay awake and adjust to the 6 hour time difference (CST Nebraska USA). This trip was for a high school band to which later marched in the New Years Eve parade and the kids had a WONDERFUL time. Even though it was very cold they marched and played well. We were set up in-groups of 5 and had many tours. We had a great tour guide for our group his name was John and was very, very patient with the kids and especially the adults. The only way I can describe London, is like going back in time the history is magnificent and the food was very good. I will say, I’ll go back again and spend more time just to take everything in. When we went to Bath, London the drive up to there was beautiful I never seen so much green during the winter months. In Nebraska, it’s normally snow covered ground. We don’t receive the rain like London does. I was lucky enough to meet several people we exchanged phone numbers and emails. We keep in touch quite often.
Thank you for a visit I’ll always remember.

SusieG, sorry, I don’t know about that, but what’s with the street / pub food in London? I mean fish and chips… chips and fish… meat pies. I love London; I love the culture, the museums, the history… but the food? Please. If it weren’t for the prevalent Indian curry options, I’d have starved.

Anyone have any tips about taking the Channel Tunnel from London to Paris? Can I purchase tickets at the last minute or is it necessary to reserve in advance?
