I’m a big fan of SCUBA diving and finally made the trip to Cairns and spent an amazing four days and three nights on a live-aboard dive boat. I’d highly recommend it over day trips if you’re a serious diver and have the time. On a live-aboard, you not only have first class cuisine and (typically) great accommodations, but of course the best part is the diving - you can get so much deeper into the reef and dive sites that are less frequented by tourists and therefore are typically more pristine. If you can stomach the long trip in open seas, a few dives in the Coral Sea would be the icing on the cake of your vacation tour of the Great Barrier Reef.
