Start in Miami and drive down Highway 1 to Key West — it’s a bit long, but well worth it. The Florida Keys are beautiful and have everything — resorts, beaches, and good restaurants. If you are looking for a quieter vacation, consider staying somewhere other than Key West, which can be a bit touristy. I stayed in Islamorada several times, both in motels/hotels, and in a houseboat rental (it was moored). Islamorada is known for its fishing, but I don’t fish — it’s just a relaxing, laid-back tropical paradise - right in the US. While your in Islamorada, visit Theater of the Sea, where you can swim with dolphins (if you make a reservation in advance). Rent a canoe and paddle over to Indian Key (next to Islamorada) to visit its historic site — only accessable by boat! Don’t forget to try the Key Lime pie, and the Conch Chowder.
