A cruise is one of the best ways to get a taste of the Caribbean without committing yourself to one particular island. As a general rule, Caribbean cruises come in two types - Eastern Caribbean which generally sails from Florida, and Western Caribbean which generally sails from California. It makes the most sense to do the part of the Caribbean that is closest to your home so that you don’t spend your time flying to your point of departure and spend your time on the cruise itself. Most cruise lines offer Caribbean cruises. I took a Caribbean Cruise on Costa - an Italian cruise line. The food was superb - far better than on another cruise line that I took up the eastern US coast. The Caribbean cruise that I took went to Ocho Rios in Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen in Mexico. A few words of advice when making off-ship visits:
- Bring sunscreen. You’ll need it and will be horribly overcharged if you didn’t bring it yourself.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll probably want to explore the island in the time you have.
- Protect your valuables. Sometimes, especially in Mexico, the areas where the ships dock have a high number of beggars and street peddlers.
- Make the most of your time. Take a tour if possible.
One of the best things about a Caribbean Cruise is it can help you figure out what islands you might want to visit more in-depth in the future.
