Cape Town South Africa Vacation Travel

More About Cape Town - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
The seasons in South Africa are opposite to those in the Northern hemisphere, and consequently, their summer break falls during our winter vacation. So if you are planning to head to Cape Town between November and January, expect peak prices. February through April offers fantastic weather, while winter (May through August) tends to alternate between rainy cold and mild sun. In May, foodies can eat their hearts out at the Cape Gourmet Festival. March brings in crowds for a few local events, so do book ahead.

Where to stay?
The waterfront is one of the most popular places to stay in Cape Town, offering mostly expensive hotels and "world-class" accommodations. Rooms in the City Bowl ensure your proximity to the restaurants, nightlife, and the trendy experiences of modern Cape Town. For lodging with a beach or sea view, Camp's Bay, Clifton and Bantry Bay are the Atlantic side hot spots; try False or Hout Bays for a less expensive harbor room. There are plenty of guesthouses and B&Bs in Cape Town's countryside, particularly in the Constantia vineyard region.

What to do?
Cape Town is a true mixing bowl of the historic, the modern, and the unchanged. To bear witness to South Africa's apartheid legacy, take a group walking tour with Footsteps to Freedom or ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was confined. To exercise your free will to spend freely, head to the shops at the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. For some peace and nature, visit the zebras and baboons at Cape Peninsula National Park or meander through Kirstenbosch national botanical gardens - where there is also a popular sunset concert series.
